Our History
My Supports, My Way
Community Living Prince Edward has proudly served our community for over 60 years. Established in 1965 by a group of parents and supporters, we came together to challenge the prevailing belief that individuals with intellectual disabilities belonged in institutions. These passionate advocates fought for a life of dignity and inclusion for their loved ones, determined to create a future where everyone could live, learn, and thrive in their community.
Over the years, as the need for more formalized support became clear, professional staff joined our mission, helping turn the vision of inclusion into a reality. Today, Community Living Prince Edward is a vital part of the fabric of our community, joining over 100 other local Community Living organizations across Ontario and a network of more than 10,000 members. The name “Community Living” signifies our ongoing commitment to inclusivity—ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, has the right to live fully integrated lives within their communities. We strive to provide the best quality of life for the people we serve, recognizing the importance of family and building communities where everyone belongs. As a non-profit charitable organization, we are governed by a Board of Directors elected by our members. We serve more than 500 individuals with disabilities and employ approximately 200 staff across various programs and locations in Prince Edward County. Our primary funding comes from the Ontario Ministry of Community, Family, and Children's Services and our local municipality. However, to meet the growing needs of those not covered by government funding or impacted by recent cutbacks, we rely on the generosity of our community through local fundraising initiatives and donations. Our commitment is simple: to continue building an inclusive, supportive, and vibrant community where everyone has the opportunity to belong
